Tata, the honorary chairman of Tata Sons, died on October 9, triggering a widespread outpouring of grief across sectors. In a message shared on LinkedIn, Gates expressed admiration for Tata’s commitment to improving lives and recalled their many collaborations over the years. “Ratan Tata was a visionary leader whose dedication to improving lives left an indelible mark on India and the world. I had the privilege of meeting him on several occasions, and I was always impressed by his strong sense of purpose and service to humanity,” Gates wrote. The two philanthropists had worked together on initiatives aimed at enhancing public health and prosperity. Reflecting on this, Gates said Tata’s contributions will continue to inspire future generations. “Together, we partnered on many initiatives to help people live healthier and more prosperous lives. His loss will be felt around the world for years to come, but I know the legacy he has left and the example he has set will continue to inspire generations.”

Their last meeting was during Gates’ visit to India in 2023. At that time, Gates gifted Tata copies of his books, How to Prevent the Next Pandemic and How to Avoid a Climate Disaster.

Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also paid tribute to Tata by recalling his last conversation with him in a post on X. Pichai highlighted Tata’s passion for India’s growth and their discussion about Google’s autonomous driving technology, Waymo. “My last meeting with Ratan Tata at Google, we talked about Waymo’s progress and it was inspiring to hear his vision. He is leaving an extraordinary business and philanthropic legacy and has played a key role in mentoring and developing modern business leadership in India.” Pichai also emphasised Tata’s commitment to making India a better place and said, “He had a deep concern for making India a better place. My deepest condolences to his loved ones and may the soul of Shri Ratan Tata Ji rest in peace.”
